Julie M. Maas-Kusske serves as the Mayor of Maple Plain. Appointed to a vacant council seat in November 2014, she was elected to the City Council and served for two years before being sworn in as Mayor in January 2017. She began her second term as Mayor in January 2020. Maas-Kusske holds a double major in Christian Studies and Elementary Education from Crown College and has been active in student leadership both in high school and college.
As Mayor, Maas-Kusske's primary responsibilities include guiding city policy and development, leading respectful meetings, and serving as the city's public face. Significant achievements that she has helped to lead include the opening of Gateway Blvd, ensuring the retention and beautiful redevelopment of Haven Homes, the establishment of Veterans Memorial Park, and implementing the Street Improvement Plan and Capital Improvement Plan. She co-chaired Heart Safe, which was recognized by the governor, and served on the Maple Plain Centennial Committee. She also helps lead the annual Veterans Day program at Orono High School and received the Orono High School Distinguished Alumni of the Year award in 2020 and the Minnesota Women in City Government Elected Official of the Year award in 2023.
Maas-Kusske believes in being present and available, adhering to her motto, "Your neighbor, your voice." She emphasizes the importance of making future-focused decisions, collaboration, and compromise. Together, we are better! Maas-Kusske actively engages with local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, serves on various committees for Orono Schools, and is involved with the American Legion Auxiliary, Friends of the Delano Senior Center, Party in the Park Tri-Chair remover tri chair, and Rotary Club service projects. She aims to ensure that every resident feels valued and part of the community, and she is committed to listening honesty, and open dialogue. Every resident needs to know that they matter and that this is our community.
Maas-Kusske holds leadership positions as the 3rd Vice President of the MN Mayors Association and Vice President of the MN Women in City Government organization. She collaborates with staff, Planning Commissioners, EDA members, and civic organizations like the West Hennepin Chamber of Commerce. Her future goals include improving and developing the downtown area, bringing a Kwik Trip to town, building a new City Hall, and creating a fire district. Maas-Kusske firmly believes that Maple Plain is a great place to live, work, and play, and she strives to enhance the community for all residents.
