Department Responsibilities
The Planning Department administers and enforces the city's zoning code, comprehensive plan, and design standards. The department provides technical assistance to both the Planning Commission and City Council. Planning is also responsible for the review of development applications to ensure compliance with Maple Plain's ordinances and policies.
A planning consultant assists staff on an as-needed basis. Land Use Applications are reviewed by staff and presented to the Planning Commission for public hearing and discussion. Final review and action is taken by the City Council upon receipt of the Planning Commission's recommendations and findings regarding an application.
Planning guides Maple Plain's future land use direction through long-range plans and zoning controls. A primary tool in oversight of planning and zoning is the City's Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan provides policy direction for the planning program on land use and development in the City, and concurrence with the regional policies of the Metropolitan Council.
