On a regular basis, the Public Works Department flushes water lines through the use of fire hydrants. Hydrant flushing typically occurs throughout the City by section as shown on the map below. Each section may take a day or two.
Hydrant flushing is the quick release of water from fire hydrants. It’s a controlled procedure that is vital to the general maintenance of the City’s water distribution system. It ensures adequate water flow is available to fire fighters, residents, and businesses. It also helps maintain water clarity and quality by clearing iron and mineral deposits from the water mains (distribution pipes).
During hydrant flushing, it is not unusual for residents to periodically experience discolored water, pressure changes, and/or an increased chlorine odor. Sediment present in the water is not a health issue, but it may impact the aesthetic quality (taste, odor, color) of the water. If you see hydrants being flushed in your area, avoid running tap water (especially hot to keep your water heater clear of excess sediment) and using the washing machine until the flushing has been completed. If you encounter discolored water after hydrant flushing, shut the water off for several minutes, then check for clarity by running cold water for a few minutes allowing new water to work its way into the pipes. Before washing laundry, wait until the water runs clear at the tap.
Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during times in which this process is undergone.
